An established Queenslander furnished for a new stage of life, Heritage House demonstrates how considered spatial planning, materiality and furniture can transform a home without changing its architectural foundations.
Kahli Jayne Designs was engaged to furnish the home’s principal living spaces, working within an existing architectural and finishes palette that would largely remain unchanged.
The brief called for a bolder, more contemporary interior that could reconcile the owners’ differing aesthetic preferences while responding to the practical realities of entertaining, a much-loved dog and a growing family. Furniture, textiles, lighting and objects were selected not only for their visual character, but for durability, comfort and the way each piece contributed to the home as a whole.
CONCEPT · The past, in the present tense
The concept began with what could not — and did not need to — change. The Queenslander’s VJ walls, breezeways and decorative detailing provided character, while existing dark floors and cooler finishes established a strong architectural backdrop.
Against this, the furnishing scheme introduced warmth through natural timber, tactile upholstery, wool, leather and softer tonal variation. Contemporary forms brought clarity to the more traditional architecture, while restrained moments of colour, pattern and collected objects prevented the interior from becoming overly formal or prescribed.
Spatial planning was equally important. Generous furniture needed to accommodate entertaining and everyday comfort without compromising circulation, while each room retained enough flexibility to adapt as the owners’ lives changed. The result is an interior that feels established rather than newly furnished — contemporary in expression, but comfortable within the heritage home it inhabits.
THE EDIT · Leather and timber pieces from Coco Republic and GlobeWest collections are layered with King Living upholstery, rugs from Bayliss and The Rug Collection, and Weave Home textiles. Commissioned work by Megan Cochran and ceramicist Jess Sellinger introduce a more personal layer, alongside objects from L&M Home, Designstuff, Atley Co, Dinosaur Designs and Maison Balzac.
